ROBERT P. THOMPSON
Robert P. Thompson, 93, of Lake Havasu City, AZ passed away Monday, July 31, of complications following surgery. He was predeceased in 2008 by his wife of 60 years, Blanche (Gryde) Thompson and in 1955 by his daughter from a previous marriage, Prudence Diana Thompson. He is survived by three children; Robert Thompson of Santa Cruz, CA,Dana Thompson (Nancy) of Mooresville, NC and Patience Kramer of Wilmette, IL. He also leaves behind five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Robert was born on May 23, 1919 in Rock Falls, IL to James Alfred Thompson and Hazel (Schmidt) Thompson. He joined the United States Army in 1939 and eventually served with the 104th Timberwolves, 413 Infantry. He fought in "The Battle of the Dikes" as the US Army swept through Belgium and Holland during the fall of 1944, and the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star. In September 2011, he joined other World War II Veterans from Arizona on Honor Flight, traveling to Washington, D.C., to view the World War II memorial and tour the Nations Capital.
Robert was an avid flyer. Prior to their move to Lake Havasu City from Southern California 24 years ago, he and Blanche often flew to Catalina Island, or to hunting and camping areas in Coastal and nearby mountain states. He was also an enthusiastic golfer and continued to play until just a few years ago. Robert was a member of The Kiwanis Club of Lake Havasu City. Robert was a long time member of the Masonic Lodge in Alhambra, CA.
The family is planning to hold a memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Arizona Chapter of Honor Flight.
