My favorite memory of Keith, as a young teenager, was when Grandpa’s 50 Chevy was stolen. He had to buy another car. A few months later, the 50 Chevy was found and returned. Grandma didn’t drive, so they decided to give the car to Keith.
He was so excited! He loved cars and loved going to the races at Lakeside, even a young boy! When we visited on weekends, Keith and Grandpa would be under the hood, fixing what had been damaged by the thieves. Grandpa was teaching Keith and he was soaking it all up!
Once they got the car in good shape, Keith was allowed to drive it. He couldn’t go on the street, of course, so he backed that car out of a very narrow garage, all the way down a very long, brick driveway, to the sidewalk. Then, he’d put it in gear and go forward, to the garage. He would do it over and over again, after school and on weekends. When we were over, we got to sit in the car with him and go back and forth in the driveway, listening to Rock and Roll on the radio and feeling like teenagers ourselves. I am sure he put hundreds of miles on that car, just in the driveway!
I have lost my oldest good buddy, who had a wicked sense of humor and always had a good joke to tell.
