Obituary of Edgar Selwyn Hayes

Edgar "Ed" Selwyn Hayes was born on June 21, 1935 in Hiram, Arkansas to Bertha Mae Edgar and Jack Oralee Hayes. They moved to Oklahoma and then onto Bakersfield, California where Ed grew up and went to school. In 1953 Ed joined the United States Air Force where he worked under Commander Curtis E. LeMay at SAC (Strategic Air Command) for 16 years as an aircraft mechanic and Tech Sergeant. He worked on 836's, KC 135's, 852's and many more. Ed served in Vietnam from 1969-1970 as an aircraft mechanic. He retired after 21 years from the Air Force in 1975. After retiring from the Air Force Ed worked for the El Toro, California Post Office as a mail carrier from 1975-1995. After retiring from the Postal Service after 21 years, Ed and his wife Mary Lou moved from Lake Forest, CA to Lake Havasu, AZ in Oct. 1995. Ed became a volunteer at the Elks Lodge #2399 working Spaghetti Night, Fish Habitat, and highway clean-up. He then became the door "greeter" at the Lodge for 16 years. He was awarded Honorary Elkette of the Year for his dedicated assistance to the Elkettes and their projects. Ed was also a member of the American Legion, the VFW and the Moose. Ed was a member of the Elks Men's Golf League and was Tournament Champion in 2007. Ed and Mary Lou enjoyed motorcycle trips to Bend, Oregon, down the California Coast, and trips to Rosarito Beach and Ensenada, Baja, Mexico with friends. They enjoyed taking their pontoon boat out on Lake Havasu and also enjoyed RVing with the Elks Wandering Wapitis RV Club, plus going on RV trips around the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Ed especially enjoyed traveling to England to see Mary Lou's daughter and family and going to Oregon to see her other daughter's family. Ed and Mary Lou have traveled to Paris, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Hong Kong, Amsterdam and Brussels and have enjoyed taking cruises of Alaska, Caribbean, Panama Canal, Mexican Riviera, and Hawaii. They enjoyed staying in their timeshares in Palm Springs, Las Vegas, and Park City, Utah and property in San Felipe, Baja, Mexico. Ed is survived by his wife Mary Lou Tudor-Hayes, his sister Lois Hayes Rippy Adams, sons Hector Rene Hayes (Diana), Edgar Selwyn Hayes, Jr. (Rosemarie), daughter Sharon Kay Hayes Flower (Billy), granddaughter Charissa Hayes Gelsinger, grandsons Robert Wixom and Edgar Selwyn Hayes III, plus a great granddaughter and great grandson.
