Gary James Wherrity, 61, of Dolan Springs, AZ, beloved husband, father, son, brother, friend, passed away at home on Thursday, January 24, 2013. The oldest child of Madeleine (Hamilton) Wherrity and the late James Wherrity, Gary was born on February 9, 1951.
After graduation from William Tennent High School, Gary joined the U.S. Navy in 1969 and served for six years aboard the nuclear submarine, U.S.S. John Adams. After his service in the Navy, he began his career as a biomedical engineer, which required his traveling all across the country and abroad, living in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for three years.
Gary lived in Lehighton, PA for several years before settling in Arizona with his wife, Carol. He enjoyed camping and living in the wide-open country. Gary had a love for adventure and travel. He and his wife, Carol, traveled the country extensively.
Gary was a member of the American Legion, the John Adams Association, the VFW, and the United States Submarine Veterans.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; mother, Madeleine Wherrity ; sons, Jason (Aislynn) Wherrity, Jay Weston; daughters, Sheri Owens, and Julie Ann (Mark) Usiak and ten grandchildren. Gary is also survived by his siblings, John (Cynthia) Wherrity, Denise (Robert) Henning, Robert (Dawn) Wherrity, Bruce Wherrity, and Joyce (Thomas) Manion.
A celebration of Gary's life will be officiated by Chaplain Dennis Colvig on February 2, 2013 at the home of Julie Ann and Mark Usiak of Las Vegas, NV. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.
