I just heard of Dan's passing and I'm so sorry to hear this tragic news. Dan likely would only have faint memories of me. I was an early childhood classmate. I first got to know Dan in sixth grade and further in Jr. High. I did not attend HS in LHC, so my friendship ended with Dan in 77. I'm writing to the family and friends of Dan that he was unique human being and as a young child I could see that Dan was a natural born leader. His military career came as no surprise to me, he was made to lead and serve his country. I remember Dan as very smart, athletic, funny and always had that huge smile that would light up a room. He would actually talk to me even though I was that quiet, kind of strange kid at the time. From what I read here, looks like Dan came from a large loving family and I'm sure his departure leaves a huge hole in your family. I wish I would have know Dan as an adult, the loss is mine.

Dan was my classmate and company mate at the Naval Academy. I remember him as the level-headed guy you could always count on. We shared a somewhat eclectic sense of humor, and Dan was a guy I could share a problem with, get good advice if I needed it, and know that he could maintain a confidence. We lost touch after graduation but I always missed seeing him at our class reunions. I am very sorry to hear that Dan passed. I wish peace for his family, Dan will be missed by everyone who knew him.

I only knew Dan for a short time in 14th company and I didn't know we shared a love of the skies. So I found the following poem to share to his family and I wish them peace.

Dan was a great classmate and fellow member of the 14th Company at the Naval Academy. Unfortunately our paths never crossed after we graduated, but I have fond memories of enlightening conversations with Dan, particularly on foreign affairs and military strategy. He was definitely one of the smarter and more serious members of our class. I'm sorry to hear he battled with cancer. I'm sorry for his family's loss.

For Dan's Family and Friends,
Dan and I were both in 14th Company at the Naval Academy in 1986 & 87.
He was quickly identified as an upperclassman who's judgment you
could trust, and that was important as I was only a plebe [freshman].
He had a terrific sense of humor and a real ability to relate, even to
plebes. We were drawn to his leadership qualities and magnetic
personality right from the start.
Dan had a significant effect on my future in sharing with me the
fact that "If you get caught just once, it's not worth it."
You see Dan and I both had in common that we had gone to other
colleges before Navy.
In his last year at Navy, Dan was chosen for a special leadership
position his first semester senior year. He was the
3rd Battalion Sub-Commander and a three striper. A job so
important, they moved him out of company. I thought to myself,
"Wow, that would be a great job to have!" So when they offered
me the same job within 2nd Battalion three years later, I jumped
at the chance. I thought to myself, "If I am following in the
footsteps of Dan Aldridge, then I must be doing all right."
Operationally, there are only nine other midshipmen,
out of the 4500, that out-rank the Battalion Sub-Commanders.
So, I wasn't the only one who thought a lot of Dan and his
leadership abilities.
Thanks for everything, Dan. You set a great example for me,
and I am sorry we didn't get a chance to be better friends.

I had the privilege of attending Annapolis with Dan and had the room next door to him once or twice. I could frequently count on my Washington Post being missing in front of my door as Dan would borrow it ahead of me reading it sometimes. We loved to talk politics and flying. We had a class together and Dan would ask me to wake him up before I left. On one or two occassions, I held a glass of water above him to get him to get out of bed and he would open his eyes and ask why I was doing such. Twenty minutes later he would come into class asking why I had not woken him. Dan was as smart a guy as I knew at school and a great guy to hang out with or have discussions, funny or deeply philosophical. It is a great regret that I haven't seen him since school days and my condolences on the loss of such an amazing guy.
