Dear Munnell family,
We were very saddened to learn that John has passed away. I had the pleasure of working with him for sevral years on the Arcadia Fire Department. My time there was 1963 until 1993. During that time we shared many experiences. My wife, Nancy and I ran into John and Donna in the Holiday Inn dining room one Sunday morning several years ago and had a very nice visit. They said that they were making the rounds of all the restaurants in town in an effort to find the best ones.
I remember that John had planned to retire on a certain date. Unfortunately, he injured his hand while working with his son on their car. That injury took a long time to heal during which John used up most of his sick days. The city requirements were that you had to have a certain number of unused sick leave on the books at retirement in order to receive continuing city-paid medical benefits during retirement to reach medicare age. Since John's sick leave had been depleted and he was forced to delay his retirement about two years in order to accrue enough sick leave to make up the deficit.
Rest in peace, John. You were a great guy!
