We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Jim's passing. Janet, I'm sending snail mail but this will be a faster way to let you know we received your note. I feel devastated for all the reasons others have mentioned. Jim was a gentleman & a scholar with a wide range of knowledge & a great sense of humor. He was such a fun conversationalist! We shared an Irish heritage & enjoyed making each other laugh. Back in the '80s, several women were returning to school after having families, joining in with the younger students just out of high school, & his psychology & history classes were so popular that we referred to ourselves as "Mr. Mahan's Groupies." He told us many intriguing stories from history that I remember to this day. I teased him that his digressions were even more fun than his lectures! He became a dear friend & later, a colleague who stopped by the library every day to see what we were up to & share an interesting thought or story. He brought in a bowl of fragrant gardenias from his yard for everyone to enjoy at the front desk. He was kind & funny, & I can't bear to think he is gone! I had been thinking of him & collecting humorous stories c.1800s from the local Maine newspaper that I knew would amuse him. Love to you, Janet, & to your family, Claire Davis

I have known Mr. Mahan since 2000. He was my instructor for psychology and US History. He wrote a letter of recommendation for me when I applied for the Arizona All American team in 2001. Thanks to Mr. Mahan I was awarded a full tuition waiver to NAU. He was a huge part of my educational success. He was a phenomenal teacher!
I was also a softball coach for many years and would see him walking the parking at Rotary. I would stop practice just to talk to him.
My last wonderful memory of Mr. Mahan was in May of 2009. My mother at the age of 69 decided to go back to school and get her GED. I had the awesome honor of being with the MCC faculty to watch her get her certificate. I sat next to Mr. Mahan during the procession.
Mr. Mahan will forever be a part of my heart. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. My condolences to his family. He's a wonderful man, and teacher. He will be dearly missed.

Jim was a wonderful man, and delightful colleague, and he will be missed by many. Jim's mentorship when I first came to MCC, and Lake Havasu, was invaluable to me as a teacher, a father, and just as a person. I will be forever indebted for his wisdom and perspective. Godspeed Jim, may you rest in peace.

Jim was always there for new and returning faculty at MCC. He had the students' interests at heart and his presence made it more fun to teach there. He had a kind and caring presence about him and was a wonderful person, inside and out... My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I don't think there has been a week gone by since I met Jim that I haven't thought about something that he taught me or shared with me. Working at MCC with him, taking classes from him, and counting him as a friend and history buff has meant so much to me. We shared many minutes at work talking history. I don't think I have ever known anyone that knew so much about --everything! He not only taught me about history but taught me that I can love loving history! My one goal in life was to find some historic detail that "Mr. Mahan" doesn't know. I did and he was surprised! But then again maybe he did know and was making me feel good. He will be missed as he has been missed since his retirement. I recently retired and now am working my way through books that he gave me when he retired and all those History magazines. I will always remember him for his dry humor, his vast knowledge, his kindness in helping me with my classes, and him standing in my office doorway with coffee cup in hand saying "did you know..."

My sympathy to Jim's family: Janet, Adam, and Abby. Jim was my classmate through elementary and high school. We graduated from Halstead High School in 1964. He was one of those rare people who was well liked by all. I had not been in touch with Jim, until very recently. I'm happy I was able to reconnect at least briefly. Rest in Peace

Jim was a wonderful teddy bear who encouraged my son, Eric Cox, when he was a young student. Not a day went by that he didn't tell me how pleased he was with Eric's academic achievements. I enjoyed his sense of humor and the genuine concern that he had for everybody who came in contact with him. I also enjoyed his big smile when we passed in the hallways of MCC while I taught there. I cried when he told me he was retiring..the college was never the same after he left. I'm glad that I knew him and Eric had him for his instructor.

Although there is little that we can say at this time when sorrow touched your heart, I want you to know my warmest thoughts are with the family. Lloyd Wells

That was a great day...I was still so new to Lake Havasu and to Mohave Community College, and I felt so welcome...Jim bought me many lunches when I didn't have a cent to spare, took care of my kids on nights I had class, and devised and taught classes with me. I only got to work with him for a short time, but Jim made a huge difference in my life. I am grateful, and I will miss him...especially running around and causing a little bit of trouble like we did now and again.

He was a man of high standards, a great intellect, s super dry sense of humor and was a great and dear friend. I miss him. Go easy Brother.

I am shocked at his passing but count my blessings having made his acquaintance. My condolences to his family, may he rest in peace.
