Nathan Hampton Hurt, Jr. passed away Sunday, 8/1/2021. He was many things: a superior engineer, an industry leader and above all, a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was born in Clifton Hill, MO on June 7, 1921. As a youth he moved with his parents, Nathan Hampton Sr and Lillian Hurt to Denver. He served in the US Navy during World War ll. Afterward he married Lucretia Ann Cutler and attended the University of Southern California and the Montana State School of Mines before graduating from the University of Colorado with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. He subsequently earned Masters degrees in both Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering. His first wife passed away in early 1980 and later that year he met and married Karin Elisabeth Feuerstein. During his career at The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company he was recognized as a leader in the design, construction and operation of domestic and international polyvinyl, polyester, rubber chemical and synthetic rubber manufacturing plants. As President of Goodyear Atomic Corporation and during senior management roles at Los Alamos Technical Associate, IDM Environmental Corporation and Sharp & Associates, he earned international recognition as an expert in the design, operation and decommissioning of gaseous diffusion uranium enrichment operations and radioactive site cleanup operations. Mr. Hurt was a lifelong member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and led the 110,000 member professional association as its President. In November, 2011 Mr. Hurt was honored by the organization “for significant contributions in the nuclear industry, particularly the field of uranium enrichment; and in the broader mechanical engineering profession as an active member and distinguished past president of ASME.” In addition, he was an active member of the American Society of Engineering Management, the American Nuclear Society and the Nuclear Materials and Management Institute. At various points in his career Mr. Hurt was also an active Rotarian and member of Kiwanis. In 1999 he and his wife moved to Lake Havasu City and Mayor Cal Sheehy officially proclaimed June 7, 2021 as Nathan H Hurt day in the city for Mr. Hurt's unwavering dedication and service to our country. Mr. Hurt is survived by two sisters Janelle Thomas and Barbara Larson, his wife Karin Hurt, his two sons and 3 daughters, 14 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.” Services were entrusted to the care of Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home.
