Obituary of Charles Mark Steinberg
Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Charles Mark Steinberg, O.D., 69, of Lake Havasu City, AZ was born in Pittsburgh, PA on October 13, 1951 and passed away much too soon on June 5, 2021 while doing what he loved- hiking, rock-hounding, and taking beautiful desert landscape photographs. Chuck was a devoted partner of 17 years to his loving spouse, JoAnn Steinberg, and a loving father to his two daughters, Rachel (Steinberg) Barnett of Cheshire, CT and Rebecca M. Steinberg of Palo Alto, CA, and to his step-daughter, Kat Lusch, and step-sons, John C. Collins, of Pensacola, FL and Michael J. Collins of Mooresville, IN. Chuck was also a caring grandfather, “Papa Chuck,” to Rachel and Larry Barnett’s two sons, Evan Barnett (10) and Logan Barnett (8). Chuck is survived by his younger siblings, Martin Steinberg, Joel Steinberg, and Gail Steinberg, and by his former spouse, Judith Steinberg, Ph.D., the loving mother of Rachel and Rebecca. Chuck is the eldest child of the late Nathaniel Steinberg and Sarah Fargotstein Steinberg of Sewickley, PA. He graduated from Washington and Jefferson College in 1973 and the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 1977. As an optometrist, Chuck devoted his life to helping people by providing quality eye care and always listening to his patients, sharing his big heart, radiant smile, sparkly blue eyes, hearty laugh, and corny, yet witty jokes. His passion and work led him to volunteer across the world with OneSight to help provide eye exams and glasses to thousands of people living without access to adequate healthcare. His long career in optometry led him to find purposeful work as a traveling eye doctor for multiple Indigenous tribes that he deeply respected in Arizona and California. He treated each patient with such delight, professionalism, and care. This role was profoundly meaningful for him and in a landscape that he deeply loved. We will miss him dearly. The family wishes to sincerely thank the “Trail Angel,” a brave young samaritan, who tried to save Chuck’s life. A Celebration of Life service will be forthcoming. In lieu of flowers and to honor his life’s work, please remember his generous spirit by making a memorial contribution to the non-profit OneSight at OneSight.org.
