Obituary of Glen Edward Tighe
Please share a memory of Glen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Glen Tighe, born in Lodgepole, Nebraska, April 6, 1933, passed away on January 13, 2021. Glen’s solid values and work ethic were molded on the plains of western Nebraska near Jailhouse Rock; and later in Manville, Glenrock, and Douglas, Wyoming. After graduating from Douglas High School and working for the phone company, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he truly found his calling. He returned to Wyoming and married Charlotte Miller in 1954, mother of Tom and Joni.
Glen’s navy career was an amazing change from the high plains of Wyoming, and he always carried a special fondness for his first ship, the USS Oriskany. Each ship left a bit of herself in his veins. Other ships he served on included the Bennington, Lexington, Reaper, Fort Marion, Isle Royal, and Piedmont. He also was the Nuclear Weapons Officer at Seal Beach, CA, Recruit Instructor in San Diego, and spent a year in Viet Nam overseeing all small craft maintenance in-country. His talents as an enlisted man were recognized, resulting in a commission to Ensign in 1963. He retired in 1978 as a Lieutenant Commander after serving as the Officer-In-Charge of the fleet support facility, Gaeta Italy.
He accepted an offer to manage a fiberglass manufacturing plant in Portland Oregon where he met and married Shirley Bowers, June 1980. When the plant sold, Glen then drove long range bus-tours, traveled with Shirley in their RV, and helped with Shirley’s newest edition of her book. From their travels they chose Lake Havasu as their new operations location, and built a new home in 2000. In retirement Glen enjoyed the travel, and loved to fish from his boat on Lake Havasu. Glen made friend’s easily and was always the first to offer his help. Whether as the Neighborhood watch organizer, or just buying a dinner for someone who looked like they could use some help, Glen made anywhere he was, a better place. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Shirley (Bowers) Tighe; son Tom Tighe, daughter Joni Keiter, 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, as well as 3 younger sisters.
