Obituary of Robert Edward Thomas Sr.

Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Robert Edward Thomas Sr., 93, went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 12th while in the care of Hospice at the Haven Health Facility.

Robert was born in Portland, Maine, April 28th, 1924 to Alfred and Dorothy Thomas. He later moved to Forest Hills, New York where he married the love of his life, Virginia. Robert and Virginia were married for 71 years and had three children Robert Jr., Diane, and John.

Robert served in the U.S. Army during WWII. His company conducted an assault for which he volunteered. He and his sergeant were injured by enemy artillery. Disregarding his own injuries he dragged his wounded sergeant to safety, shielding him with his own body and administered first aid until help arrived. For his actions Robert was awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart, and the Croix de Guerre. After the war, Robert returned to New York. Robert was part of the Teamsters and worked as truck driver for 41 years, until his retirement in 1986. Robert and his wife Virginia moved to Lake Havasu City in 2002.

Robert was known as a kind and gentle man. He loved his family and was always a great provider. He had a solemn wisdom that he would humbly share, and he was never quick to judge. Robert was very respected and carried himself with dignity and class. By all accounts, Robert lived a modest life and preferred to give rather than receive. He will be deeply missed and always loved.

Robert was preceded in death by his loving wife Virginia and his youngest son, John. He is survived by his son Robert E. Thomas Jr. (Irene) of Citrus Springs, Florida, his daughter Diane Kuerner (Robert) of Lake Havasu City, seven grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, 1605 McCulloch Blvd. on Sunday, Aug. 27 at 3:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital and Shriners Children's Hospital.
