Late in 1969, a young U.S. Army inductee named Myron reached out to his back-home buddy, Steve Housty, remarking on the solitude involved in being away at basic training camp. Steve gave Myron's camp address, as well as that of Myron's bunkmate from a nearby town, to his girlfriend, asking her to recruit some classmates to correspond with these two lonely warriors.
I, then a high school sophomore, eagerly began writing to the bunkmate while another student chose to write to Myron. Her participation eventually faded off, and I ended up exchanging letters with both young soldiers, whom I met for the first time at my house the night before they left for advanced training. I stopped breathing when Myron came through my front door; I knew innately that a bond had formed.
I wrote to both guys during their entire tours of duty. I shared my life with them through the end of my junior year, offering prayers, support, sports scores and hometown news. (Remember, this was before the internet and texting.) They shared their lives with me, literally walking me through their days and nights in Vietnam, which were radically different from what the networks fed to us back home.
In the fall of 1971, Myron - now a civilian - came to my house for the second time. In 1973, we were married! That link started with passing on a request for letters.
Godspeed, Steve Housty. Myron and I will see you again on the other side.

Melanie and the Seljan family, I didn't know Steve as well as most of you but we have run in the same family circle for a very very long time and shared many happy memories and a few sad ones. What I know to be true from my observations is that Steve was a quiet kind man who had a quick smile and a great sense of humor who loved his wife until his last breath. In my book that makes him a very special person indeed. Please know that I share in your sorrow in losing your loved one.

Sending prayers and condolences to Melanie and family. Steve was a dear, sweet friend...He was so funny, sweet, generous and if one needed advice on any home project or auto job question, Steve would call us back and have the answer! We will miss him so much.. He was Rons good buddy, and Ron would look forward to his phone calls and videos... He will not be forgotten he will always be in our hearts. Rest In Peace Steve, I'm sure Steve is up in heaven now playing with Jazmin.. Hugs and prayers Ron and Irene,

My Dear Steve, I miss You so much!! I've been looking through pictures and have so many great memories of our 41 years together! I am so glad we renewed our vows last year. I wasn't ready for you to leave but I know you were in so much pain, it broke my heart to see you like that. I think of you constantly and will never forget our lives together! One day I will join you and we'll be together again!!! I Love You Today and Forever!!! xoxo
