Obituary of Marvin Vanderpool

Marv Vanderpool departed this earth to be with Our Lord February 28, 2013. He was born August 1, 1932 in Jennings County, Indiana to Dessie Van Cleve and Albert Vanderpool. He was raised in areas of Ohio and Kentucky and graduated from high school in 1950 at Beatyville, Kentucky. He joined the Air Force and completed 13 special schools affording him with specialized and advanced training. He was discharged from the Air Force at Nellis Air Force Base, Las Vegas, Nevada in December 1955 and subsequently settled in Las Vegas and Boulder City, Nevada. He married Margaret Michaels (Maggie) Lebsch July 3, 1971 and they resided in Boulder City until their retirements in 1989. After traveling in their motor home for 3 years, they settled in Lake Havasu in November 1991. It was then that Mary fulfilled a dream to build an airplane. He had received his pilot's license in 1975 and had a passion for aviation. The first plane - a Lancair 360 won Grand Champion Awards at the EAA Copperstate fly-in. He built a second Lancair ES for Dr. Ron Cook and then switched from fiberglass to tube and fabric and built a Super Cub replica, which also won a Grand Champion award. At the time of his death, he was completing a Zenith 750 with the help of good friends Gary Scott, Shannon Stebbens, Ron Rounds and other local EAA members and friends. During several summers, he helped his friend Bill Piper of Creston, BC, Canada to restore a 1929 Monocoach and they proudly flew it together. Marv was a member of the QB's American Legion, Technical Advisor for local EAA, and Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. He was also very proud of his life membership in the Elks. Prior to retirement he owned A & M Marine in Boulder City and had an extensive background in mechanics. For those that knew him and worked with him, there appeared to be absolutely nothing that he couldn't excel in - and, he was never hesitant to tackle any new challenge with great expertise. One good friend related to Maggie, that he had learned so much from Marv but the most important one was that Marv had taught him to be a better man. Marv's love and respect for his friends is what endeared him to all. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Albert and Dessie, and his youngest sister Marci Vanderpool. Survivors are his wife Margaret, sisters Dana Baker and Shirley Sharp and brother in law Ralph Sharp, nephews Michael, David, Eric Sharp; niece Lisa Sharp Myers and her husband Todd and children Jared and Ryan Myers, all of San Diego. Close friends Val and Lou Ann Striyle; Gary Scott; Shannon Stebbens; Ron Rounds; Bill Piper; Jerry Fischer; Tom Olsen; Perry Rutan; Paul Baughman to name a few. New Hope of Hospice offered tremendous support and comfort during the last 6 months of his life. Per his request he was cremated. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Marv's name to New Hope Hospice, Beacon of Hope and Our Lady of the Lake.
