Please share a memory of Stephen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Stephen "Steve" Philip Smarr
On the morning of July 18, 2014, Stephen freed himself of the pain of having lost his wife and best friend, Linda, three weeks earlier and joined her at peace. Steve was 66 years of age and last resided in Golden Valley, Arizona.
Stephen was born on June 19, 1948 to the late Kenneth (Gus) and Margaret Smarr, of Washington, DC.
Stephen graduated in 1969 from Washington Lee High School in Arlington, VA. In 1970, he married his true love and best friend, Linda. They raised two children, Augusta and Brian.
Stephen proudly served Fairfax County Fire and Rescue from 1971 until injury forced him into early retirement in 1990. His love of firefighting was second only to his love for his family. Well respected amongst his peers, his memory will always embody that of a mentor and a hero.
Always a jokester, Stephen had a gift for engaging others in stories of his youth, in his years as a firefighter for Fairfax County, Virginia, and his many adventures traveling. His eyes always twinkled telling a story and lit up the room.
A true outdoorsman, Stephen enjoyed woodworking, fishing, hunting, camping, traveling, and playing Bingo with his wife Linda, as often as possible.
Beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Stephen is survived by his daughter Augusta, son Brian, brother Doug, and grandchildren, Elvis and Sterling. He is deeply missed, loved and will always remain a hero in our hearts.
A celebration of Stephen's life will be held for family and friends in New Mexico during Christmas time, as he is honored with his late wife, Linda. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Fairfax County Firefighters Fund, PO Box 401 Fairfax, VA 22038
