Harold Carleton Hunter Jr. 1923-2014
Harold Carleton Hunter Jr. was born May 2, 1923, in Point Arena California. Harold's Dad moved his cattle ranch to Salinas, so the kids could attend school.
He joined the US Marine Corps and was sent overseas as an Arial Gunner in WWII. Stateside, he was stationed in El Toro. In 1942, he met his future wife, Laurie Brown, through the introduction by his best friend. They were married March 24, 1944. They resided in Salinas while Harold finished Junior College. He received a scholarship to play football at the University of Idaho, Moscow.
Their first son, Gerald Alan was born on March 1, 1951 and Dad graduated from University in 1952.
His first job in Range Management with the US Forest Service was in downtown San Francisco. Harold was promoted and moved to Alturas, California where their second son, Dana Leland was born on April 28, 1954.
Next transfer led the family to Porterville, CA, working for the Sequoia National Forest Service. His next promotion as District Ranger moved the family to Pinehurst in the Sierra Mountains.
When his son Jerry was playing sports, the family relocated to Bishop California, on the Inyo National Forest. Harold started a baseball team for older kids, managing and refereeing the sport for years. Five of the players he managed in High School went on to secure the State Title.
Because of Harold's love of horses, he helped start the famous Mule Day's Parade in Bishop.
He is survived by his wife Laurie, his sons and their wives, Jerry and Wanita, and Dane and Marcy, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
