Dr. M.U. Broers of Schleswig, IA died early Friday morning, Jan2, 2015, following surgery in Las Vegas, NV. Born in Burr, Ne on November 18, 1923, Merlin was the only son of George and Dorothy Broers. He graduated from high school in 1939 and attended Peru State College until called by his country. He served in the U.S.Army in World War 11, in the Medical Corp and was the lead singer in the army band. His unit landed on Omaha Beach on "D-3" and advanced to Berlin. He returned to the States a decorated hero, having been awarded the Purple Heart.
The following year he met the girl of his dreams at a dance—she became his dancing partner for life. Merlin Broers and Anna Belle Buethe were married in Tecumseh, NE on June 12, 1947. He attended the University of Nebraska Medical School and graduated in 1950. After a residency in Sioux City, IA they made their permanent home in Schleswig, Iowa. He was very involved in the community raising funds to improve the library, build a new elementary school, a municipal swimming pool, and to establish a golf course.
He practiced medicine as a General Practitioner for 39 years in Schleswig, Ia. He was named President of the Iowa Academy of Family Practice the year before he retired. Upon retiring he spent his winters in Lake Havasu, AZ. He loved his profession and people and made many lifelong friends. He had many hobbies; some of his favorites were golfing, making stained glass windows, playing cards, cribbage and pool and traveling the world.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, and his beloved wife, Anna Belle.
He is survived by his four children: Craig Broersof New Orleans; Deborah Bredenkamp of Waco, NE; Scott Broers of Grand Island, NE; and Barbara Reynolds of Lake Havasu City, AZ.
He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
Service for Dr. M. U. Broers will be held this spring at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, IA on May 16th, 2015.
