HAROLD CARL MESERVY
September 30, 1927 - April 24, 2013
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our Dad and Eternal friend, Harold Carl Meservy, who returned to our Heavenly Father's care on Wednesday, April 24, 2013.
Harold was born in Hollandale, Minnesota on September 30, 1927, and was raised there until 1932, when the family relocated to nearby Hanlontown, Iowa. As a youngster, Harold helped around the family home and spelled the gas station operator for the early morning and afternoon school bus runs. In later years, he did finishing work on newly-built farm machinery. Upon graduating from high school, he found a full time position as a mechanic, staying there, as Harold put it, "until Uncle Sam was breathing down my neck".
He enlisted in the U.S. Army for three years, with Basic Training, then training in heavy equipment operation. He was deployed to Inchon, Korea, and then walked to the front, carrying his rifle, a bandolier of ammo and all the warm clothes available. After nine months crossing and re-crossing the 38th parallel as part of a heavy weapons company, Harold was sent home for more schooling and was posted to Orleans, France for the remainder of his Army service.
Harold headed west to California, and found work with General Dynamics Convair as a telemetry draftsman, a skill which he developed and refined into a lifelong vacation. Harold met our mother, Mary in 1958; they married in 1959, and supported each other for more than 54 years, in San Diego until 1995, and in Lake Havasu City, Arizona until (and perhaps after) Mary passed on February 27, 2013.
Harold is survived by Mary's four children Geoffrey Martin of Georgetown, Texas, Christopher Martin of Seattle, Washington, Michael Martin of Ventura, California and Kati Martin of Half Moon Bay, California; more than twenty grandchildren and great-grandchildren scattered around the world.
He will be missed by all of us, for his honesty and fortitude, and with every warm thought imaginable.
A Memorial Service will be held at Community Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to your local Kiwanis Club or to the Interagency Council Community Food Bank.
