Obituary of Margaret Mary Brou
Please share a memory of Margaret to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Margaret Mary Brou died at The Havasu Nursing Center, Lake Havasu City AZ, on Friday 22 February 2015. A Memorial Service, Rosary, and Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, 25 February 2015 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church.
Margaret, the second of four children, was born in October 1922 in New Orleans LA. Her father, Edward; mother, Bertridge; and brothers Edward and Philip preceded her in death. Raised in New Orleans and in Ocean Springs, MS, she attended St. Alphonsus Catholic School and Ocean Springs High School. She received her BS in Microbiology from the Mississippi State College for Women in 1943 where she still holds records in swimming and diving.
Upon graduation, Margaret was a laboratory technician at the VA Hospital and taught high school science and mathematics in Biloxi and Ocean Springs until 1950 when she took over the family sporting goods business running it most successfully until her retirement over 30 years later. Living on the Mississippi Coast forged her amazing character and resiliency as Hurricane Camille in 1969 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005 each destroyed her homes. After Katrina, Mary Ellen Bromfield, drove to Ocean Springs, packed up her few belongings and pets and moved her to Lake Havasu City AZ where with Mary's help, she remade her life yet again.
Margaret, an accomplished pianist and organist, was a cellist in her college orchestra and was music director for two Catholic churches on the coast and a member of the Our Lady of the Lake choir.
An equestrienne, boater, fisher, and all around outdoorsperson, Margaret was active in local politics, the VFW, the Chamber of Commerce, the American Red Cross, and the Civil Air Patrol. She is survived by her sister, Claire Elizabeth Brou, of Ocean Springs and her dearest friend, Mary Ellen Bromfield as well as nine nieces, nephews, and two additional generations of their families, along with countless friends and acquaintances.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Margaret's memory to Catholic Charities or a charitable organization of your choice.
