William Roger Gettings, 59, died on Friday, October 3rd, 2003 in Lake Havasu City, AZ. He was born in Los Angeles, CA; on June 3rd, 1944, the son of James and Harriet Gettings.Orphaned in early childhood, he was raised by his grandparents in Arkansas, where he graduated from Gravette High School and later attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville as a pre-pharmacy student. After his grandfather's he came back to the Los Angeles area and served as an Ontario police reserve officer. He later graduated as number one cadet in his class at San Bernardino Sheriff's Academy. During this time he married Lois Ellen, and they had one child, Amy Leigh.William entered the army in 1966 serving two years, including on year in Vietnam. Returning in 1968, he began his career as a police officer with the city of Upland, CA.He became a detective in 1974. He continued his education during this time, and completed his B.A. degree in Public Administration and Management from the University of Redlands in 1978. In later years he elected to drive trucks, working for J.B. Hunt and CRST.He moved to Lake Havasu City, AZ; 7 years ago and bought a home. Here William worked as a security guard at Beachcomber RV Resort. He was a gentlemanly, polite person who lived quietly and enjoyed reading, especially about sports, politics, and American history. He dined out frequently and liked to discuss these favorite subjects with friends over dinner.He is survived by his daughter Amy Leigh Martin and son-in-law Phillip Martin, both of Worcester, MA; brother James Carter Gettings and sister-in-law Sandy Gettings, both of Hesperia, CA.A memorial service will be held at London Bridge Beach at memorial flags on Thursday, October 16th, 2003 at 5:00 PM.Arrangements were entrusted to Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home.
