Cecil May Spear, 96, of Lyons, died July 15, 2013 in Golden Valley, AZ. She was born March 19, 1917 near Audubon, Iowa, the daughter of Richard Ellis Carley and Cecil Adell Denney Carley.
In 1921, at the age of 4, she moved with her family to the Manhattan area and has been a resident of Kansas since then except for 17 winters spent in Mesa, Arizona.
She was united in marriage to Russell Henry Spear on October 9, 1939 in Kansas City, Kansas. He preceded her in death on July 29, 2000.
Cecil was active in Girl Scouts and was the first Activities Directors of Park Place Apartments in Lyons. She joined the staff of the Lyons Daily News in 1960 and retired in 1976 as Society Editor.
She has been an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lyons since moving to Lyons in 1942.
In addition to her husband, Cecil was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Sydney Estelle Kanyo and her husband, William Kanyo of Golden Valley, AZ; two grandchildren, Kelly Russell McDonald of Kingman, AZ and Shannon Laurene Cummings (Scott) of Battle Mountain, NV; two great-grandchildren, Ian Wright of Carlin, NV and Shanda Humphries (Jon-Paul) of Winnemucca, NV and two great-great-grandchildren, Savannah Humphries and Memphis Wright, both of Winnemucca, NV, NV.
Services were held at the First Presbyterian Church of Lyons.
Burial will be in the Lyons Municipal Cemetery at 1:30 PM on Saturday, July 27, 2013.
