Owen Thomas Barry II, 86, passed away on Sunday July 10, 2005, following a long battle with emphysema. He was born June 16, 1919 to Alice and Owen T. Barry in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.Tom grew up in a lumber family. His grandfather and father owned and operated Hawkeye Lumber and Mill Co., located in downtown Cedar Rapids near the dam.Tom was drafted into the military in 1941 and served as one of the first radar navigators and bombardier operators on the B-29 aircraft. During his tenure in the military he had 684 hours of combat flight time, bailed out over enemy territory and flew over the Himalayas 33 times. As a first lieutenant, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Presidential Unit Citation, five Bronze Stars, and the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Cluster. During this period he met Lucile Passwater, who became his wife of 61 years.Following World War II, Tom joined his father at the lumber company and became president and part owner. In 1957 Tom started his own business of designing residential homes in Cedar Rapids until his retirement in 1984. That year Tom and Lucile moved to Lake Havasu City. His family said that both Tom and Lucile enjoyed playing tennis and bridge, and were members of St. Michael's Methodist Church.His family said that Tom was an artist. He loved painting and wood sculpturing, and won serveral awards in jury-selected art shows around the country. His art is displayed in many private collections and in museums, businesses and industries. He was an active member of the Lake Havasu Art Guild.Tom is survived by Lucile: four children, O.T. Barrry III of Los Angeles, F. Scott Barry of San Francisco Bay area, Summer Lynn Dawson of Salt Lake City, and Roger S. Barry of Indianapolis, Ind.; and nine grandchildren.His body was donated to ScienceCare.Donations may be sent to Hospice of Havasu P.O.Box 597, Lake Havasu City, Arizona 86405.Arrangements were entrusted to Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home and Crematory.
