Joseph Robert McAndrew MD, 83, passed away Friday, April 10, 2009 in Lake Havasu City, AZ with his beloved family by his side. He was born on September 27, 1925 in Clarksburg, WV to Michael and Delia (Barranger) McAndrew.Joe served his country proudly under the direction of the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and again under the direction of the United State Air Force from 1952 to 1954 as a navigator.Joe graduated college from West Virginia University, then Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He did his internship at Valley Forge Hospital in Phoenixville, PA while in the Air Force. He was discharged as a Captain. Joe then continued his surgical training as a resident at Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago. In 1960 he began his surgical career at Lake Forest Hospital and Highland Park Hospital in Illinois. He married Kathy Larson at St. Clements Catholic Church in Chicago in October 1960.In 1973 Joe and Kathy moved to Lake Havasu with their four children to continue his surgical career. He retired in 1990 but returned to be a surgical assistant in 1992 and finally totally retired in 2000.He loved sports; his favorite Arizona teams being the Diamondbacks and Suns and his favorite Illinois teams were the Bears and Cubs. Besides sports, Joe enjoyed his work, traveling, reading, boating, golfing, entertaining with friends and spending time with family especially his grandkids.Joe was a member of the London Bridge Rotary Club, Toast Masters, Arizona Medical Association, Mohave County Medical Society and Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church. He kept busy serving on the boards of the Cancer Association of Havasu and the Heart Association of Havasu.Dr. McAndrew will live on through the memories of all who knew him and all who he cared for throughout the years. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Kathleen McAndrew of Lake Havasu; children, Tierna McAndrew of Phoenix, AZ, Michael (Kim) McAndrew of Lake Havasu, Tricia (Jeff) Manier of Manson, WA and Tom (Donna) McAndrew of Phoenix, AZ; brother, Dr. Jack McAndrew of Avalon, NJ; sister, Emily Koenig of Milwaukee, WI and nine loving grandchildren, Zachary, Lauren, Caitlin, Chase, Jack, Grace, Jake, Logan and Nicole. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dr. James McAndrew and sister, Maureen Allison.A gathering will be held Thursday, April 16, 2009, 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church with a Rosary to be said at 7:30 PM. A memorial mass will be held Friday, April 17, 2009, 5:00 to 6:00 PM, also at Our Lady of the Lake followed by a reception in the Parish Hall.Donations may be made in Joe's name to Hospice of Havasu, PO Box 597, Lake Havasu City, AZ 86405 or Cancer Association of Havasu, PO Box 1410, Lake Havasu City, AZ 86405.Thoughts and condolences may be submitted to the family at www.lietz-frazefuneralhome.comArrangements were placed under the care of Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home & Crematory.
