Walter Norman Castro passed away at his home on Sunday February 14, 2010 at the age of 88. He was born on May 20, 1921 in Honohina, Hawaii to Benhelio and Rosaline (Medeiros) Castro.Following school, Walter went to work for the Hakalua Sugar Plantation where he worked for many years. Walter also became involved in the Hawaii Territorial Guard and following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he was drafted into the United States Air Force. Following his service to the country, Walter went to work for the Yamada Transfer Company of Hilo, Hawaii as a truck driver and drove for them for 18 years.Walter met Doris in Covina, CA and the two were married on December 17, 1960. Several years later they moved to Hawaii; stayed for about 19 years and then moved to Victorville, CA. They then relocated to Lake Havasu City 13 years ago to be closer to their family. Walter and Doris became active members of Grace Episcopal Church. Among Walter's hobbies were fishing, trips to Laughlin and Las Vegas to play the slots, watching basketball, he was an avid Lakers fan and he also coached the Hakalua Plantation Basketball team.Walter is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Doris L. Castro; son Donald R. Holmes and his wife Bobbi of Lake Havasu City; daughter Karen L. Bruton and her husband Bryan of Burnet, TX; brothers William Castro and his wife Elizabeth of Honolulu, HI, Wendell Castro and his wife Carlina of Hilo, HI, Leslie Castro also of Hilo, HI and Clyde Castro of Las Vegas, NV; sisters Bernice Gannon of Honolulu, HI, Emogene Pacheco of Hilo, HI and Bernadine Lovewell and her husband Leonard of Honolulu, HI; grandchildren Michelle, Wendi, Robert Scott and Elizabeth; four great grandchildren, soon to be five and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Merlyn, Freddie and Douglas and sisters Shirley and Caroline.Memorial services will be held on Saturday February 20, 2010, 11:00 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church. Father David Richardson will provide words of comfort and inspiration. Military honors will be conducted by the Marine Corps League.In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Walter's name to Grace Episcopal Church, 111 Bunker Dr., Lake Havasu City, AZ 86403 or to your favorite charity.Thoughts and condolences may be submitted to the family at www.lietz-frazefuneralhome.comArrangements were placed under the care of Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home & Crematory.
