Evans, William MarvinDecember 28, 1920 - April 1, 2010William Evans, 89, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2010, after a stroke and a heart attack the previous day.William was born to Roscoe Evans and Lola Vern Vansycoc and graduated from Jackson High School in 1938. After graduation, he worked as a munitions welder for the next few years.After marrying Rachael Bums, his widow after more than 67 years, on July 4, 1942, he enlisted in the Navy, where he served for the next 4 years, first on the submarine U.S.S. Bonita until it was decommissioned, and then at the naval bases at Pearl Harbor and Midway.William was a member of the Order of Freemasons (Hartsville F&AM #547) for 65 years, earning the title of Master Mason, a Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. After training at Purdue, he managed the grain elevator at the Decatur County Farm Bureau Cooperative Association, where he worked for 40 years. He also contributed his time to the Letts volunteer fire department over those 40 years.His favorite pastimes were reading books (especially Westerns), watching baseball, and playing cards.He is survived by his widow, Rachael; his daughter Marva Lynn; his grandchildren Michael and Mikaela; his sisters Carolyn and Maxine, and several nieces and nephews.
