OBITUARYMARY DORIS ROUNDS 11/21/1924 - 9/30/2010Mary Doris Rounds peacefully departed this life into the hands of her loving Father God at Hospice of Havasu Polidori House in Lake Havasu City on 9/30/2010. She was born in Sabetha Hospital, Sabetha, Kansas to Thomas and Gertrude Rooney of Seneca, Kansas, the only one of the five children of this marriage to be born in a hospital.She grew up in Seneca, attending and graduating from St. Peter and St. Paul's Catholic schools. After graduation she worked for Kansas Power and Light for several years as a secretary until entering St. Joseph School of Nursing in Kansas City in 1944 as a member of the United States Army Nurse Corps. After graduation and the obtaining of her RN, she moved to Topeka, Kansas and began her career as a nurse at St. Francis Hospital. She spent the remainder of her life in nursing occupations, as a nurse, a nurse educator in LPN and RN education for over 23 years, a nurse student recruiter for the State of Kansas, and finally in the VA system, in Topeka, Denver, CO, and Albuquerque, NM. During these years she pursued a Bachelor Degree first at Washburn University in Topeka, transferring to Kansas State University at Manhattan, Kansas where she completed her BA, MA and PhD (1974). Her transfer with the VA to Albuquerque, NM, brought her to the position of Associate Chief of Staff for Education at that facility in 1979. She retired in 1985 due to a stroke which prevented her from continuing her work in that position. During her active career years she was also on the School of Nursing faculty at several universities. Additionally she was a professor with the off campus department of Southern Illinois University at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, NM for ten years. She served on the Dean's Committee for the School of Medicine at University of New Mexico. Additionally she taught for the VA system in several REMEC centers across the country. She enjoyed a full and fulfilling professional life for over forty five years.Mary Doris married Alfred Woltkamp in 1947 and two children, Linda and Tom, resulted from that marriage. She met and married Richard Rounds in Albuquerque in 1982. The merging of their families was a blessing to all and together they celebrated every day of their nearly 29 years of marriage. They moved to Lake Havasu City from Mountainair, NM, in 1985. She has been active in PEO, AAUW, HRMC Auxiliary, OSL, Grace Episcopal Church and St. Michael's United Methodist Church.She is survived by her husband, Richard S. Rounds of Lake Havasu City; daughter Linda Woltkamp of Aurora, CO; sons Tom Woltkamp (Darchelle) of Topeka, KS, and Stan Rounds of Las Cruces, NM; four grandchildren: Amanda Woltkamp of Colorado Springs, CO; Melissa Woltkamp of Centennial, CO; Chris Rounds (Amy) of Midland, TX; and Disa Walker (Jeremy) of Hobbs, NM., and three great grandchildren: Haylee Walker, Ryan Rounds and Tyler Rounds. Additionally she leaves a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by grandson Anthony Woltkamp.She enjoyed traveling, being in the outdoors, camping, fishing, and cooking over a campfire. She was known to all as an outstanding and creative cook. Al1 who met her encountered a delightful, cheerful, charming, warm and positively helpful person.
