What To Expect During The Funeral?
Funerals are an essential ceremony. They honor the dead, allow people to say their final goodbyes to loved ones, and help with grief. However, guests at such an event often feel anxious and uncertain. They don’t know what to expect or how to speak with grieving family members. At Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home & Crematory, we have seen several friends, colleagues, and partners struggle to offer their support or condolences. Here’s a look at what you can expect during a funeral to help ease your anxiety:
1. Seating
The front seats are usually reserved for close family members. Most funeral homes will direct you towards a specific seat so you don’t need to guess where to sit. However, if the funeral director doesn’t offer any assistance, choose a seat in the back unless you are a close family member.
2. Arriving Early
Arrive 10-15 minutes before the funeral is scheduled. It is never acceptable to be late to a funeral as it can cause disruption and appear disrespectful. If you do arrive late, take a seat in the back row and be as discreet as possible.
3. Order-of-Service
Some funeral ceremonies are carefully organized and follow a particular order of service. The director, priest, or celebrant will explain the order of service before the ceremony begins. They may even provide pamphlets with instructions on them. They will also explain if your participation is necessary and what you may need to do.
4. Behavior of Family Members
Different people respond differently to grief. Some may seem perfectly indifferent but are deeply affected inside. Others may cry or rage as a way to express their grief. Expect all kinds of emotional outbursts at a funeral and remain calm.
