What is a Green Burial?

The funeral space has seen a number of changes over the years, and green burials are one of them. Standard burials are a strain on the environment and require huge amounts of concrete, wood, and formaldehyde. Many people feel that cremation is a better option to a burial. However, it too isn't very eco-friendly. A large amount of energy is required per cremation, and it releases a lot of harmful emissions into the air.

Green Burial - The Facts

A green burial, on the other hand, doesn't use any kind of embalming fluids and no burial vault is required. The land management system is also more sustainable. So what exactly is involved in a green burial?

  • The materials and methods used in a green burial reduce the impact on the environment.
  • The body isn't embalmed and it is buried directly in a biodegradable container. There is no grave liner or concrete vault in the earth.
  • A green burial usually won't have any grave markers. Even when a marker is used it would just be a tree or one made of simple stone.
  • When a communal memorialization is offered, there would generally be a central object such as a boulder, garden, fence or obelisk.
  • In a green burial, the grave or the grounds would only have a number of different beneficial plant species.
  • None of these plantings would be mechanically or chemically managed.
  • The water and land would be used optimally in order to ensure that the property is sustainable.
  • These properties would also focus on the maintenance aspect such as conserving the native species or their ecological biosphere.

In short, a green burial is one in which there is the least impact on the environment. If you have any questions or want to know about our services, contact us at Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home. You can call us at (928) 855-4949 or (928) 753-2555 or through our online form.
